Washington, D.C. – Nancy Zirkin, executive vice president of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued this statement regarding the expected announcement that the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction (“Supercommittee”) has decided not to make a deal:

“The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights commends members of the Supercommittee who refused to buckle under to unreasonable demands for major cuts in Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and other programs vital to the health and well-being of millions of Americans, and for rejecting additional, budget-busting tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires.

Simply put, no deal is better for America than a bad deal.

Now that the Supercommittee has completed its work, it’s time for Congress to refocus on the real crisis facing our country by adopting policies that create opportunity and put Americans back to work. Creating jobs and growing the economy is the only sure path to long-term, shared prosperity that includes every community, reduces poverty, and expands the middle class.”

Nancy Zirkin is executive vice president of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 200 national organizations to promote and protect the rights of all persons in the United States.
