Nancy Zirkin, executive vice president of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued this statement regarding the introduction of the Rebuild America Act:

“The Leadership Conference applauds the introduction of the Rebuild America Act for its focus on American families and our future. Chairman Harkin’s bill contains sensible and long-overdue investments in education, job training and creation and infrastructure, as well as critical protections for workers and taxpayers.

The Leadership Conference is particularly pleased with the measures proposed by Chairman Harkin to invest in education. With our nation facing steep competition in a global economy, lingering high unemployment, and persistent inequalities in our education system, the proposed bill could not have come at a better time. The education-related measures proposed by Chairman Harkin will help to jumpstart both our schools and our economy by:

Modernizing K-12 schools and community colleges by providing formula grants to states.

  • Supporting our nation’s teachers with professional development programs geared toward preparing students to be college-and career-ready.
  • Improving access to high-quality childcare and early childhood development for working and lower-income families.
  • Expanding training to prepare workers for 21st century jobs, including funding to build partnerships among businesses, schools, labor and economic development officials to ensure a well-trained workforce.

We also commend Chairman Harkin for his leadership in recognizing and seeking to provide much needed protection to all working Americans, including establishing a fair minimum wage, requiring paid sick days, providing grants to train workers for well-paying jobs of the future, and expanding opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

The Leadership Conference urges swift consideration and passage of the Rebuild America Act.”
