Civil and Human Rights Coalition Condemns Michigan Rollback of Collective Bargaining Rights

Washington, DC – Wade Henderson, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement in condemnation of Michigan Governor Rick Snyder’s plan to sign legislation that rolls back the collective bargaining rights of Michiganders:

“By championing this bill, Governor Snyder is telling millions of families that they don’t deserve job security, health care benefits, or wages that support their families and strengthen the middle class. His contempt for Michigan workers is shameful.

Michigan holds a special place as the heart of the American labor movement and the governor is clearly overreaching. This unilateral assault on collective bargaining is an insult to the generations of Michigan union workers who increased fairness and safety in the workplace while advancing the cause of social justice. It is a threat not just to union workers but to all working people.

By denying public scrutiny of his actions and circumventing the normal legislative process, Governor Snyder is daring working people to fight back hard—and they are. The civil and human rights community stands with the working people of Michigan as we fight tooth and nail to turn back this initiative.”
