WASHINGTON, DC – On Monday, April 15 from 10:00 a.m. to noon, civil rights leaders, members of the Equity and Excellence Commission, members of Congress, and education experts will present a new report outlining next steps for narrowing the education disparities identified by the commission.
Secretary of Education Arne Duncan established the Equity and Excellence Commission to address disparities in resources and opportunities that contribute to achievement gaps. The commission’s final report, “For Each and Every Child,” released in February 2013, is a landmark document that presents a bold vision for a more equitable American public education system, along with detailed recommendations for policymakers at the federal, state, and local levels.
Meeting the commission’s goals will require unprecedented public and political will to dramatically change how schools are financed and managed. To help advance the equity agenda, The Leadership Conference is releasing a new report – “Reversing the Rising Tide of Inequality: Achieving Educational Equity for Each and Every Child” – a call to action to provide each and every child the education she or he deserves. A distinguished and diverse panel of speakers will review what the findings and recommendations of these groundbreaking reports mean for policymakers, parents, students, and educators.
The briefing is sponsored by The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, the Education Testing Service, and the Education Law Center.
