WASHINGTON, DC – Nancy Zirkin, executive vice president of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement in response to news reports that President Obama is expected to nominate Jason Furman, deputy director of the National Economic Council, as the chairman of the president’s Council of Economic Advisers:

“The civil and human rights community welcomes reports of the nomination of Jason Furman to become the next Chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers. Furman has been a champion for economic policies that help everyday Americans and for helping low-income communities rise from misery of the foreclosure crisis and recession.

Furman’s work at the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities, the World Bank, and in both the Clinton and Obama administrations demonstrates that we can build a vibrant economy from the middle out. His voice and ideas consistently focus on the need to rebuild the economic security of the diverse communities we represent at The Leadership Conference. We applaud his expected nomination and urge the Senate to quickly confirm him.”
