Update on 6/19: Press Call Advisory: Civil Rights Groups to Analyze Supreme Court Rulings on Decision Days in Shelby and Fisher

Media 06.19,13

WASHINGTON – In advance of historic Supreme Court rulings on key voting rights and equal opportunity in education cases, a coalition of civil rights litigation and advocacy organizations will host press calls at 12:30 PM EDT on upcoming decision days (Thursday, 6/20 and Monday, 6/24). The same number and passcode will be used for each of the calls (877-783-4260 – Verbal Passcode: “Supreme Court.”)

Because the release date of specific rulings will not be announced in advance, and with the possibility that decisions in some of these cases could be announced on the same day, the civil rights organizations involved in Shelby County v. Holder (Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act) and Fisher v. the University of Texas-Austin (equal opportunity programs at universities), are collaborating in their rapid-response analysis of the opinions.

Rulings in these cases may come down shortly after 10:00 AM EDT on Thursday, June 20th or Monday, June 24th. It is possible that the Court will add more decision days. This advisory will be updated to reflect the situation as it evolves. On any day that one or more of these cases is decided, a press call will be held at 12:30 PM EDT to provide an initial analysis from key litigators and stakeholders.

Once a ruling is announced by the Court, The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights will send an updated advisory with a link to the opinion, phone number, and more details about who will be on each call.

The groups involved have all played key roles in one or more of these cases and include the ACLU, the Asian American Justice Center, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, MALDEF, and the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund.
