WASHINGTON, DC – Wade Henderson, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement after a bipartisan group of members of Congress signaled interest in fixing the Supreme Court’s disastrous decision to gut the Voting Rights Act (VRA):

“Just days after one of the most disastrous Supreme Court decisions in memory, we welcome the growing bipartisan congressional interest in restoring the Voting Rights Act.

Already, a growing list of Republican and Democratic leaders, including Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, and senior members of the House Judiciary Committee like John Conyers, James Sensenbrenner, Jerrold Nadler, Steve Chabot, Mel Watt, and Bobby Scott, as well as John Lewis have called on Congress to put politics aside and ensure the right to vote is protected for all Americans.

Today’s anticipated Senate passage of immigration reform is further evidence that bipartisanship is possible in Washington. The Voting Rights Act has always enjoyed strong support from both Republicans and Democrats in Congress, and we trust that when the basic voting rights of millions of Americans are stake,  this spirit of bipartisanship will prove decisive again.

We look forward to working with members of both parties to right the Court’s wrong and restore the Voting Rights Act.”
