Washington, D.C. – Wade Henderson, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement after the Senate HELP Committee voted 15-7 to advance the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) for consideration by the full Senate:
“One of the most important ideals behind our nation’s movement for civil and human rights is that every worker should be judged solely on his or her merits. Today’s bipartisan committee vote on ENDA brings us another step closer to making this ideal a reality.
As we have seen with the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ the growing number of states that embrace marriage equality, the demise of the Defense of Marriage Act, and ever-increasing levels of public support, the movement for LGBT equality has reached a tipping point that can no longer be denied. As ENDA moves to the Senate floor and beyond, the only question left for lawmakers is whether they want to be remembered for standing on the right side of history.
We are grateful to Senators Tom Harkin, D. Iowa, Mark Kirk, R. Ill., and the other committee members who supported ENDA today. As this profoundly important bill moves forward, I hope an overwhelming number of their colleagues will join them.”
