Washington, D.C. – Wade Henderson, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement regarding the Federal Communications Commission’s vote on a rule to reform the predatory prison telephone rates charged to the families of inmates:

 “After a decade of advocacy by families, alongside civil rights, consumer, and religious groups, the FCC has finally taken a stand against predatory prison phone rates. This important policy reform will benefit millions of families that must choose between staying in touch with loved ones and putting food on the table. 

Today, Acting FCC Chair Clyburn has shown what’s possible when the commission uses its power to improve the lives and well-being of everyday families. We have every reason to believe that incoming Chair Tom Wheeler shares these priorities and we hope he will take cues from Clyburn’s tenure.”
