Press Call on Bipartisan Introduction of Second Chance Act w/ Sen. Portman, Rep. Davis, Civil Rights, and Public Policy Groups

WASHINGTON – On Wednesday, November 13 at 8:30 AM EST, the same day that the Second Chance Act is introduced, leading congressional co-sponsors of the bill will join with civil rights and public policy groups on a press call to brief the public about the need to pass this critical legislation.

On the call, Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) and  Representative Danny Davis (D-IL), will discuss their bicameral and bipartisan introduction of the Second Chance Act reauthorization. 

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights will also release a new report, “A Second Chance: Charting a New Course for Re-Entry and Criminal Justice Reform,” which outlines a policy agenda for easing the re-entry of formerly incarcerated individuals into society.  The report, with a foreword by civil rights lawyer, advocate, and legal scholar Michelle Alexander, also outlines how the Second Chance Act, among several policy recommendations, would strengthen our economy and make our country safer.

On the call will also be the head of the Council of State Governments Justice Center, which provides assistance and training to entities that provide re-entry assistance, as well as a formerly incarcerated person who has directly benefited from the programs funded by the act.
