WASHINGTON – Nancy Zirkin, executive vice president of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, released the following statement on the possibility that the livelihood of millions of federal workers and retirees, and long-term unemployed Americans could be threatened in the House-Senate budget negotiations:

“In budget deal after budget deal, rather than closing tax loopholes, it’s working-class people who are being made to suffer. While corporations take advantage of massive tax advantages and government subsidies, it’s working Americans who are bearing the brunt of sequestration, the government shutdown, furloughs, and benefit cuts.

The Murray-Ryan deal must replace sequestration to invest in families and communities. That would be a true reflection of the American priorities and values that the civil and human rights community can stand behind.

The budget deal must reflect our national priorities and values. Cutting the retirement benefits of federal workers or abandoning the unemployed does neither.”

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights is a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 200 national organizations to promote and protect the rights of all persons in the United States. The Leadership Conference works toward an America as good as its ideals. For more information on The Leadership Conference and its 200-plus member organizations, visit www.civilrights.org.
