VRAA Capitol Hill Rally TOMORROW by House Triangle, After Senate VRAA Hearing & on Anniversary of Shelby County v. Holder Decision
WASHINGTON – On Wednesday, June 25, the nation will mark the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court decision in Shelby County v. Holder, which gutted key voter protections of the Voting Rights Act. The day will be marked with a Senate hearing on the bipartisan Voting Rights Amendment Act (VRAA) and a rally urging the House of Representatives to move forward in the legislative process.
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS FOR WEDNESDAY, JUNE 25TH:
10:00 a.m. – Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing: “The Voting Rights Amendment Act, S.1945: Updating the Voting Rights Act in Response to Shelby County v. Holder”
- Location: Room 106 Dirksen Senate Office Building.
- Witnesses include NAACP LDF President and Director Counsel Sherrilyn Ifill, Georgia NAACP State Conference President Francys Johnson, and Texas State Senator Sylvia Garcia.
12:30 p.m. – Rally to Fix the Voting Rights Act:
- Location: Zone 10 on the House side of the U.S. Capitol Grounds, behind the House Triangle. (Inclement weather location is HVC 215 in the House Visitor’s Center).
- Speakers will include Senate witnesses, members of Congress, impacted voters, and civil and human rights leaders.
