Press Call Thursday: Civil Rights Advocates to Oppose Senate’s Education Rollback for Vulnerable Students
WASHINGTON – On Thursday, July 16 at 11:00 AM ET, civil rights advocates will call on the Senate to oppose the education bill, the Every Child Achieves Act (ECAA). The Senate is expected to vote on final passage of the ECAA later in the day.
Civil rights, women’s rights, disability rights, and education advocacy organizations are opposing this reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act because it throws students of color, students with disabilities, English learners and low-income students under the bus. It allows schools and districts to take federal funds and yet freely ignore the needs of vulnerable students and doesn’t require any interventions to narrow massive and stubborn disparities in achievement and opportunity.
