WASHINGTON –– Today, The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and The Leadership Conference Education Fund announced the promotion of longtime Vice President for Field Operations Ellen Buchman to a new position on their executive leadership team, executive vice president for field and communications.

Buchman has led the organizations’ field department for 12 years and was field director for the American Association of University Women for five years before that.

“Ellen Buchman is one of the most insightful and committed civil rights advocates I’ve ever met,” said Wade Henderson, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference and The Education Fund. “Her leadership is indispensable for The Leadership Conference and for the civil and human rights movement writ large.”

In the new position, Buchman will oversee The Leadership Conference’s field and communications departments and will help strengthen the organizations’ presence outside the Washington beltway.

“The Leadership Conference was always known as the lobbying arm of the civil and human rights movement,” said Buchman. “This change will help cement our role as a leader in building the field and communications capacity of our movement.”

The promotion puts Buchman on the executive team of The Leadership Conference alongside Henderson, Executive Vice President for Policy Nancy Zirkin, and Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Karen Lawson.
