Parents, Teachers, and Civil Rights Advocates Come to Washington for ESEA Conference Committee
WASHINGTON –– Tomorrow in Washington, D.C., parents and teachers will join education and civil rights advocates from across the country to urge their members of Congress to improve the proposed reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).
Organized by The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, lobby day participants include civil rights and disability advocates, teachers, and parents who want to improve the ESEA proposal being discussed by members of the conference committee.
The constituents have coalesced around four necessary fixes to the ESEA proposals: strengthening accountability for schools and districts to educate all groups of students, including students of color, students with disabilities, low-income students, and English learners; improved data collection; mandates for states to close disparities in resources for high-poverty schools; and sufficient oversight from the U.S. Department of Education.
