Civil and Human Rights Coalition 40th Annual Awards Dinner to Honor Nancy Pelosi and Bryan Stevenson
WASHINGTON – On Wednesday, May 11, 2016, The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights will salute House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, the first woman Speaker of the House of Representatives, and founder of the Equal Justice Initiative, Bryan Stevenson, with the coalition’s highest honor at the 40th Annual Hubert H. Humphrey Civil and Human Rights Award Dinner. This will also be the final dinner hosted by Wade Henderson, 20-year president and CEO of The Leadership Conference, who will step down at the end of 2016.
The Humphrey Award is presented annually to outstanding individuals who best exemplify Senator Humphrey’s selfless and devoted service in the cause of equality—an honor roll that, over the years, has included President Bill Clinton, Congressman John Lewis, former chair of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation Sheila Bair, civil rights champion Dr. Dorothy Height, disability advocate Tammy Duckworth, and labor leader Dolores Huerta, among others. Last year’s honorees were Attorney General Eric Holder, former ACLU Washington office director Laura Murphy, and Senator Bob Dole.
“Honoring Leader Nancy Pelosi and Bryan Stevenson is a fitting way to commemorate our 40th annual dinner and my final year in leading The Leadership Conference,” said Henderson. “In the spirit of our award’s namesake, our honorees have championed social justice and inclusion, and answered Senator Humphrey’s exhortation to embrace civil rights for all Americans and to ‘walk forthrightly into the bright sunshine of human rights.’”
