Civil and Human Rights Coalition Condemns Senate Blockade on SCOTUS Nomination
WASHINGTON – Wade Henderson, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement in response to several statements from Senate Republicans that they would refuse to give a fair hearing to – or even to meet with— any potential nominee for the Supreme Court:
“This is not governance, it’s obstinance.
For the Senate Republicans to refuse to even meet with a Supreme Court nominee is playground politics at its worst.
‘Advice and consent’ is a settled constitutional principle and to pretend otherwise is to distort our nation’s founding document and even the most basic lessons on the three branches of government.
To refuse to act on a nomination of this magnitude is a failure to govern. We urge these senators to take a step back and consider what legacy of governance they want to leave for our country.”
Wade Henderson is the president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 200 national organizations to promote and protect the rights of all persons in the United States.
