National Civil Rights Leader Holds Talks in Cleveland on Education, Voting Rights, and the Supreme Court

CLEVELANDOn Tuesday, March 15 and Wednesday, March 16, nationally renowned civil rights leader Wade Henderson will give a series of speeches in Cleveland highlighting national and local civil rights concerns with educational equity, the Voting Rights Act, and the confirmation of a Supreme Court justice. 

Henderson is the president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, the coalition of more than 200 national civil rights groups that has coordinated national lobbying efforts on behalf of every major civil rights law since 1957. He has previously served as the Washington Bureau chief of the NAACP and as the associate director of the ACLU. 

On Tuesday, March 15 at 7:00 pm, Henderson will deliver the Sidney Z. Vincent Memorial Lecture during the 69th annual meeting of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland’s community relations committee at the Maltz Performing Arts Center. The lecture will focus on educational equity after the passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act. Henderson will be joined by Eric Gordon, CEO of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. 

On Wednesday, March 16 at noon, Henderson will host a Voting Rights Act and Supreme Court issues forum with African-American clergy and community leaders at the Murtis Taylor Community Service Center.  Henderson will discuss the role that Ohio Senator Rob Portman can play regarding legislation to restore the Voting Rights Act  and to end the obstruction of the upcoming nomination to the Supreme Court.
