Civil and Human Rights Coalition Urges Supreme Court to Side with Families in U.S. v. Texas
WASHINGTON – Wade Henderson, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement urging the Supreme Court to uphold President Obama’s deferred action immigration policies in U.S. v. Texas. The Leadership Conference filed an amicus brief in this case with over 320 other civil rights and immigration groups. The Supreme Court is hearing oral argument in the case today:
“More than a year ago, President Obama announced deferred action policies to provide administrative relief to hardworking immigrant families who live in our communities and contribute to our economy every day. Not only are these policies morally right, they create jobs and expand the economy.
But because of this politically motivated, anti-immigrant lawsuit, the President’s initiatives have been frozen, forcing millions of parents and children to continue to live in the shadows, in constant fear of deportation and being separated from their families.
As the Court hears oral argument today, we urge the Justices to stand on the side of immigrant families who need relief immediately, not on the side of partisan politics and hatred that would tear thousands of vulnerable families apart. Ultimately, we are confident that the Supreme Court will find President Obama’s common sense actions to be legally sound and morally right.”
