Advisory for Tuesday: Advocates Deliver 1 Million Petition Signatures to the Senate to Stop Jeff Sessions
WASHINGTON – Tomorrow, February 7 at 3:30 pm EST, Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), member of the Judiciary Committee, will accept 1 million petitions calling for the Senate to reject the nomination of Jeff Sessions for Attorney General in advance of Wednesday’s expected vote.
The petitions were collected and will be delivered by groups including The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, People for the American Way, Daily Kos, MoveOn, UltraViolet, Color of Change, Common Cause, the Center for American Progress, Friends of the Earth, NARAL Pro-Choice America, Rock the Vote, Faith in Public Life, Voto Latino, Free Press, Asian Americans Advancing Justice—AAJC, and the Bill of Rights Defense Committee.
Sessions has a 30-year record of racial insensitivity, bias against immigrants, disregard for the rule of law, and hostility towards the protection of civil rights that makes him unfit to serve as the Attorney General of the United States. In our democracy, the Attorney General is charged with enforcing our nation’s laws without prejudice and with a deep commitment to justice. And, just as important, the Attorney General has to be seen by the public – every member of the public, from every community – as a fair arbiter of justice and independent check on the administration.
