Press Call Briefing: Annual Poll of Black and Latino Parents and Families Underscores Clear Sense of Educational Inequity

Media 05.29,17

WASHINGTON – On Tuesday, May 30 at 1:00 p.m. EDT, The Leadership Conference Education Fund and Anzalone Liszt Grove Research will host a one-hour telephone press briefing to discuss the second annual “New Education Majority” poll that captures the views of parents and families of color on education. The poll’s findings come at a critically important time for public education in the United States as states are currently developing education plans as part of their obligations under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). These plans are states’ opportunities to make a clear declaration about their belief in the education of all children and a commitment to ensuring children get the education they deserve.

The “New Education Majority” national poll was commissioned to explore how Black and Latino parents and families view the American education system’s success in educating their children. It is meant to start a conversation about education policy changes that are truly reflective of what Black and Latino parents and families want and includes recommendations for policymakers.

Some of the key findings speakers will discuss include:

  • Perceptions of racial disparities remain strong among new education majority parents and families, and in some cases are even more pronounced than last year.
    • The lack of funding for students of color is seen as the biggest cause of racial disparities in education, and racism has risen to become the second biggest driver among both African-American and Latino parents and families.
    • Parents and family members of color whose child’s teachers are mostly White are more likely to believe schools are “not really trying” to educate students of color than those with mostly Black or mostly Latino teachers.
  • New education majority parents and families continue to place a premium on high expectations and academic rigor for their children.

The poll is available here.
