Clarence M. Mitchell, Jr.

Director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Washington Bureau and the NAACP’s chief lobbyist (1950-1979), Mitchell, popularly called the “101st Senator,” led the struggle for the passage of key legislation during the civil rights movement, including the Civil Rights Act of 1957, the Civil Rights Act of 1960, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the Fair Housing Act in 1968.

George Meany

Former President of the New York State Federation of Labor (1934), former President of the American Federation of Labor (1952), Meany was President of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations after they merged in 1955.
