Arthur S. Flemming

Appointed to the Civil Rights Commission in 1939, Former Secretary of Health, Education & Welfare (1958-1961), chaired the White House Conference on Aging (1971), Former Head of the United States Commission on Aging (1973), Flemming was later fired as U.S. Commission on Civil Rights Chair by President Reagan. He was an important figure in the shaping of the nation’s Social Security policy.
