Media 05.30.17

The 2006 Hubert H. Humphrey Civil Rights Award Dinner was held on May 4, 2006, in Washington, D.C. This years honorees were Monica Lozano and the makers of the film “Crash,” whose “selfless and devoted service in the cause of equality” best exemplifies the spirit of Hubert H. Humphrey, vice president, senator, and outspoken civil rights pioneer.

“This year’s awards focus on communications and the importance of what we say to and how we treat each other,” said Wade Henderson, LCCR’s executive director. “Using two different media – a film that confronts the reality of race in America and a newspaper that targets the nation’s fastest growing population – these awardees have made a real difference in how Americans can better understand themselves.”

Lionsgate’s extraordinary film, written and directed by Paul Haggis, presents a powerful, gut-wrenching examination of race and class in America in an entertaining, provocative, and uncompromising way.

Starring Don Cheadle, Sandra Bullock, Matt Dillon, Terrence Howard, Ludacris, Thandie Newton, and Jennifer Esposito, the film weaves together the lives of people of different races, ethnicities, and backgrounds as it challenges viewers to confront their prejudices.  This film recently won an Oscar for best picture and original screenplay, and received the Screen Actors Guild award for best performance by a cast. More about Crash
