Civil and Human Rights Coalition: House Budget Must Put People First, Protect the Vulnerable

WASHINGTON— Ahead of the House Budget Committee’s consideration of its FY 2018 budget resolution, Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, released the following statement:

“The American people deserve a federal budget that invests in all of our families and communities and that is animated by the values of fairness and creating opportunity for all. The House Republican budget resolution, inaccurately titled ‘building a better America,’ does none of these things. Instead it proposes large, unnecessary tax cuts for millionaires, billionaires, and wealthy corporations, massive increases in military spending, and rollbacks on consumer protections. All of this would be paid for by slashing assistance to the most vulnerable, including children, and by cutting crucial programs like Social Security Disability Insurance, Medicaid, food assistance, and more. This proposal would hurt working families and communities of color in order to make the rich even richer. We urge lawmakers to reject this cruel blueprint and instead work in a bipartisan manner to pass a budget that will help create a better future for all people in the United States.”
