Civil and Human Rights Coalition Lambastes Republican Tax Principles

WASHINGTON – Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement on the Republican tax principles announced today:

“The tax cut proposal put forward by the Trump administration and Republican leadership today is Robin Hood in reverse. Instead of investing in working families and communities throughout our nation and asking everyone to pay their fair share, this plan would likely provide trillions in dollars of unnecessary tax cuts to millionaires, billionaires, and wealthy corporations. And make no mistake – this Republican proposal, if adopted, threatens Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare, our education system, and our infrastructure.

This partisan proposal not only fails to address the economic injustice, income inequality, and growing racial and gender wealth gap in our nation, it will make these problems worse. And after dramatically increasing the deficit to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations, no one will be surprised when the same people pushing this plan next use the deficit as an excuse to take away health care and other critical programs, disproportionately hurting working families, women, people with disabilities, and communities of color. We don’t need to wait for the full details – we already know the Republican tax cut proposal is a recipe for disaster.”
