Civil and Human Rights Coalition Welcomes Demise of Nomination of Brett Talley

WASHINGTON – Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement after the White House indicated the nomination of Brett Talley to the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Alabama will not be moving forward:

“This is welcome and long overdue news. Brett Talley never should have been nominated for a federal judgeship in the first place, let alone considered by the Senate Judiciary Committee. He simply lacks the basic minimal experience necessary to serve as a judge, and he has demonstrated ideologically extreme views that call into question his temperament and judgment. It is no wonder that the independent, nonpartisan American Bar Association gave Talley its lowest possible rating: unanimous Not Qualified.

The Republican Senate has been rushing through and rubber stamping controversial and unqualified nominees. As Talley shows, with many of these nominees, a careful, deliberative examination of their records will clearly demonstrate that they are not suitable to serve as federal judges. It’s time for President Trump, Leader McConnell and Chairman Grassley to apply the brakes and ensure a more thorough vetting of judicial nominees.”
