Call your senators and insist that they #DropDreiband
Take Action: On January 8, President Trump renominated Eric Dreiband to head the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division. A history of undermining civil rights enforcement
There are serious concerns about Eric Dreiband’s ability to lead the Civil Rights Division. His scant record, and lack of commitment to important issues such as law enforcement accountability, shows that he is the wrong person for the job. Dreiband has:
- devoted the vast majority of his career to defending corporations accused of employment discrimination;
- publicly opposed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act in 2008 saying that it would not “advance the public interest”, although he denied doing so during his hearing yesterday;
- criticized the Obama administration’s Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) enforcement priorities, including its ‘ban-the-box’ guidance that promotes fair chance hiring; and
- filed lawsuits challenging the Affordable Care Act’s provisions that require employers to extend reproductive health care benefits to female employees.
During a time when our country desperately needs leadership in civil rights enforcement, it is clearer than ever that Dreiband is the wrong choice to protect our civil rights.
Sixty years ago, the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division was created to protect the civil rights of all in America. Our nation needs an Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights who is committed to enforcing laws that make America more fair and just. Very little in Eric Dreiband’s career suggests that he can do the job.
