Civil and Human Rights Coalition Responds to the Trump Shutdown

WASHINGTON – Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement in response to the federal government shutdown:

“Last night made clear that President Trump and Republican Congressional leaders would rather shut down the government they control than fix the problems they created for children and families in America. As it turns out, ‘he alone’ cannot fix the problems of Washington – it is glaringly apparent that President Trump is the problem.

Today is a new day to forge a bipartisan solution that protects Dreamers, vulnerable children in need of medical coverage, and American towns and cities recovering from record-breaking disasters. This is a time for leadership, not posturing. We need a bipartisan solution now.”

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights is a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 200 national organizations to promote and protect the rights of all persons in the United States. The Leadership Conference works toward an America as good as its ideals. For more information on The Leadership Conference and its member organizations, visit www.civilrights.org.
