WASHINGTON Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement ahead of President Trump’s State of the Union address:

“President Trump has much to explain to the American people. He and his allies have spent the past two years attacking our civil and human rights and fostering fear and hate, which culminated in a wrongheaded shutdown that wreaked havoc on the nation.

“Today’s address presents President Trump an opportunity to turn a corner, away from his assault on our rights and his fear-mongering, and toward an agenda that puts the needs of all people in America front and center. While one ‘presidential’ speech will not repair the damage he has wrought on our country, it can signal a clean break from past actions. More than ever we need a leader and an administration that protects civil and human rights. The country is watching.”

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights is a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 200 national organizations to promote and protect the rights of all persons in the United States.
