WASHINGTON – Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement on the expected votes on H.J.Res. 46, the Senate resolution to terminate President Trump’s “national emergency” declaration, and H.Con.Res. 24, the House resolution calling for the report of Special Counsel Mueller to be made available to the public and to Congress:

“Congress must remember that lesson we are taught in school – there are three co-equal branches of government. Fidelity to the Constitution is a fundamental exercise of patriotism and should never be a partisan issue.

“Trump’s vanity project is not a national emergency by his own admission. He is trying to circumvent the Congress and its constitutionally mandated role. Members have repeatedly rejected his call to waste taxpayer dollars on a southern border wall.

“Members of Congress and the public deserve to see the Special Counsel’s report. We must restore confidence in our elections and address the overwhelming public interest in crimes and corruption that threaten our democracy.

“We urge both chambers to pass their respective resolutions.”
