Mueller Report Shows U.S. Democracy Under Fire

WASHINGTON – Allyn Brooks-LaSure, executive vice president for communications at The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement on Attorney General William Barr’s public release of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report:

“Trump tweeted, Barr spun, but finally, the American public is able to see parts of the Mueller report. Far from the rosy picture painted by Trump and Barr, the Mueller report is a veritable crime novel that makes clear just how unethically members of this administration act and how much our democracy is under fire.

“When foreign actors interfere with our hard-earned right to vote, they are directly attacking the core of our democracy. Mueller’s redacted report sheds some light on this reality, but the American people deserve to know the full scope of foreign interference.

“Despite assertions from Trump and Barr that there was no crime committed, the fact is that the Mueller investigation was unable to conclude that Trump ‘clearly did not commit obstruction of justice.’ There can be no confusion as to how Trump’s behavior was unethical, unbefitting his office, and flat-out wrong.

“The American people deserve a government that upholds the rule of law and protects their fundamental civil rights. They deserve an independent Attorney General. They deserve to hear public testimony from Mueller himself. And they deserve answers about what will be done to stop further foreign interference and safeguard our democracy. The legitimacy of our government is on the line and Congress must respond swiftly to this threat. As the report makes clear, the ball is now in their court.”
