WASHINGTON – In a Providence Journal op-ed, Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, makes the case for the Equality Act, which ensures that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people have equal access to their rights under the law.

“We are not the land of bigotry. We are the land of the free,” writes Gupta. “The American people understand what this bill is all about: dignity for their friends, family members, neighbors, colleagues, or themselves. The Equality Act expands existing civil rights law to ensure that LGBTQ Americans have the same rights as every other protected community. No more and no less.”

A bipartisan House of Representatives last month passed that landmark civil rights legislation. The full text of the op-ed is available here.
