WASHINGTON – Kristine Lucius, executive vice president for policy and government affairs at The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement on the Senate Judiciary Committee’s vote to advance the nomination of Peter Phipps to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit:
“Peter Phipps is the fourth nominee to the Third Circuit and the fourth nominee who is a staunchly conservative white man. President Obama nominated Rebecca Haywood, who would have been the first African American on the court, but the Senate majority refused to advance her nomination. Instead, they are pushing forward nominees like Phipps. Senator Casey, one of his home-state senators, opposed his nomination based on concerns that the White House uses ideological criteria to select nominees for lifetime federal seats. We could not agree more: Phipps’ nomination is a continuation of Trump’s shameful effort to stack the courts with white, male ideologues. The Senate must put a stop to this and vote against the confirmation of Phipps to the Third Circuit.”
