WASHINGTON – Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, released the following statement about Senator Alexander’s objection on the Senate floor today to the Fostering Undergraduate Talent by Unlocking Resources for Education (FUTURE) Act, which funds Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs):
“Senator Alexander today shamefully stood in the way of necessary funding for HBCUs, MSIs, and their students. The House easily passed the bipartisan FUTURE Act in time to avoid the September 30 deadline when funding expires. As the civil rights community said in its principles, higher education should advance equity and protect civil rights. This disgraceful action does neither.”
