WASHINGTON – Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement on the anniversary of Trump’s Muslim ban:

“Let’s be clear: Indiscriminate profiling based on nationality, ethnicity, or religion does not make our nation stronger or more prosperous — it makes us weaker. It terrorizes and separates families. And it betrays our highest values of justice, fairness, and inclusion. Congress must pass the NO BAN Act immediately. The Leadership Conference calls on moral leadership from all members — because the work to fight hate must be bigger than any one of us, or any one political party. We look forward to working with Congress until the day these protections are signed into law.”

Gupta joined Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.) and Congresswoman Judy Chu (D-Calif.) — lead sponsors of the NO BAN Act — along with Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii), and Dick Durbin (D. Ill.) and Representatives Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), André Carson (D-Ind.), and Don Beyer (D-Va) earlier today to call for passage of the NO BAN Act. House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler today announced that his committee will vote on the NO BAN Act in two weeks.

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights is a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 220 national organizations to promote and protect the rights of all persons in the United States.
