WASHINGTON – Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement on President Trump’s supposed Executive Order to “temporarily suspend immigration into the United States:”
“Trump and Stephen Miller will stop at nothing to advance their white nationalist agenda, including shamelessly manipulating a pandemic to justify xenophobic policies. This proposal plays to Trump’s base, scapegoats immigrants, and seeks to distract from his severe and ongoing failures to address COVID-19. Attempting to use this public health crisis to divide us endangers us all. We won’t be fooled by this dog whistle, and neither will the American public.
“Immigrants are valuable members of our society who contribute actively across sectors. Even during COVID-19, they are among the public health workers, teachers, cooks, farmers, and delivery persons coming together in shared sacrifice to help all of us. We support our immigrant brothers and sisters and are confident that if Trump does not withdraw this foolhardy policy, the courts will.”
