WASHINGTON – Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ final rule on the non-discrimination protections (Section 1557) of the Affordable Care Act.

“Supporting discrimination in health care is always wrong. It is particularly irresponsible and inappropriate during an unprecedented public health crisis that has killed more than 100,000 people in America. The final rule encourages discrimination and impedes on the rights of patients. Shame on the administration for focusing on non-essential rulemaking that will inevitably exacerbate the harm that this pandemic has already caused.”

The Leadership Conference and more than 275 leading civil rights groups called on the administration in May to suspend the final rule during the public health crisis.

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights is a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 220 national organizations to promote and protect the rights of all persons in the United States.
