WASHINGTON – On Monday, June 22, at 12:00 p.m. ET, Congressman Bennie G. Thompson (D-Miss.) and civil rights advocates will host a press call to oppose Cory Wilson’s nomination to the Fifth Circuit ahead of his scheduled Senate cloture vote that afternoon. The full Senate is expected to vote on his confirmation later in the week. The speakers will underscore how nominations like Wilson’s further entrench injustice and how judges play a significant role in our justice system for decades to come.

The country is reeling from the confluence of police brutality, systemic racism, and the COVID-19 crises, but Senate Republicans are ignoring calls for justice and relief. During this unprecedented time, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Chairman Lindsey Graham are instead singularly focused on advancing judicial nominees who are determinantal to our civil and human rights. Cory Wilson is unfit for this seat. His record and remarks on civil rights, including disdain for voting rights and protections and calls to gut the Affordable Care Act — which has ensured lifesaving health care access for millions of Americans during this deadly pandemic — are disqualifying. And he would be the 200th confirmation for a lifetime judge appointed by Trump. He has a disturbing record on other civil rights issues as well, including reproductive freedom, gun safety, LGBTQ rights.

To RSVP, please email Rafael Medina at [email protected].
