WASHINGTON – Lena Zwarensteyn, Fair Courts Campaign Director at The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement on the Senate’s vote to confirm Cory Wilson to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.

“Cory Wilson, the 200th lifetime confirmation under Trump, embodies the Trump-McConnell takeover of our courts. While the people demand policing reform and relief from the COVID-19 pandemic, McConnell is doubling down on stacking our courts. These efforts to dismantle our civil and human rights will reverberate for generations to come.

“Wilson is unfit for this lifetime position on the Fifth Circuit with its rich diversity and long history in affirming our civil rights. Wilson’s record against civil rights and health care, and his lack of judicial temperament and experience, should have disqualified him. It is disturbing that McConnell elevated to this court someone with a record antithetical to ‘equal justice under law.’”

Read The Leadership Conference’s letter in opposition to the confirmation of Cory Wilson. Wilson has attacked the Affordable Care Act, calling the expansion of health care to millions of Americans “perverse” and “illegitimate.” He defended discriminatory photo ID laws, and has contempt for voting rights activists, panning them as “rent-a-mobs.” He is an outspoken opponent of reproductive freedom, LGBTQ equality, and common-sense gun safety laws.
