WASHINGTON — Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement on the Trump administration’s recent attempts to ban diversity trainings, censor the teaching of American history, and scare those who dare to engage in honest conversations:
“In a moment when leaders across our society are taking a hard look at their responsibility to forge an inclusive anti-racist future, Trump’s efforts to silence a conversation, deny access to information, and enforce the lie of white supremacy must be universally rejected. Banning diversity training, censoring the teaching of American history, and creating a sham investigation of a university finally beginning to wrestle with its past, are part and parcel of his agenda of hate and division.
“We know that rooting out systemic racism demands that all of us confront the difficult truth of the ongoing legacy of racism and discrimination in this country. We remain committed to fighting for an America as good as its ideals — an America that has done the work in reckoning with our racist past and present to forge a just, equitable, and inclusive future.”
The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights is a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 220 national organizations to promote and protect the rights of all persons in the United States.
