Trump Administration Continues to Gut Anti-Discrimination Housing Protections

WASHINGTON – Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement on the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s final rule to destroy a key civil rights legal tool under the Fair Housing Act, which will make it harder to challenge systemic racism by housing providers, financial institutions, and insurance companies that deprive people of the services and opportunities they need:

“While the pandemic and economic fallout continue to devastate communities of color, it is deeply irresponsible and heartless for HUD to weaken the Fair Housing Act yet again by gutting the disparate impact rule. This is a pattern. The administration has systematically eroded anti-discrimination laws, and this latest attack literally hits people right where they live. It is not debatable—everyone should be given a fair opportunity to have a place they can call home. We will continue to work with allies inside and outside the civil rights community to ensure that everyone has access to safe, non-discriminatory, and fair housing.”
