WASHINGTON – Lena Zwarensteyn, Fair Courts Campaign Director at The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement on the Senate’s confirmation of five Trump judicial nominees in the past two days:

“Hundreds of thousands are dying from COVID, infection rates are spiraling out of control, unemployment is high, and people are hungry. But instead of working to pass COVID relief, funding the government, and addressing systemic violence and state-sanctioned violence against Black and Brown people, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has recklessly prioritized the confirmation of partisan judicial nominees.

“Senate Republicans have deliberately abandoned communities that need urgent relief from this pandemic in order to confirm lifetime judges who embody Trump and McConnell’s anti-civil rights agenda. By confirming nominees like Stephen Vaden, Toby Crouse, and Kathryn Mizelle, they are counting on these judges to side with them and their cronies instead of protecting the rights of the people.

“It is unacceptable. The people do not need more anti-civil rights judges. We urgently need relief from this devastating pandemic.”
