WASHINGTON – Wade Henderson, interim president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement following the vote in the U.S. House of Representatives on the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act:

“The House of Representatives took an important step to help bring an end to the vicious cycle of police violence by passing the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. We now need the Senate to truly step up to the plate and protect Black and Brown communities from the systemic perils of over-policing. It is Congress’ moral and ethical duty to help end the cycle of police brutality and racism targeting people of color. We look forward to working with the Senate to strengthen this legislation to protect and save the lives of our brothers and sisters who have been brutalized for far too long.”

The Leadership Conference, along with more than 400 organizations, sent a letter to Congress last year offering eight critical proposals that would move the nation forward on the path to true transformation and ensure that police officers live up to their oath to protect and serve.

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights is a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 220 national organizations to promote and protect the rights of all persons in the United States. The Leadership Conference works toward an America as good as its ideals. For more information on The Leadership Conference and its member organizations, visit www.civilrights.org.
