Vanita Gupta is a consensus builder with broad support

WASHINGTONWade Henderson, interim president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, released the following statement following today’s Senate confirmation hearing of Vanita Gupta to be Associate Attorney General of the United States:

“Vanita Gupta’s testimony during her confirmation hearing unequivocally demonstrated that she is the right leader to serve as associate attorney general at this time. The broad support she has from civil and human rights organizations, conservatives and progressives, and law enforcement organizations and police reform advocates alike, showcases that she is a proven consensus builder who can find real solutions to the very serious challenges we face. The country needs the Senate to swiftly confirm Gupta so she can quickly get to work building a more equitable justice system.”

If confirmed, Vanita Gupta would be the first woman of color to serve as associate attorney general, and the first civil rights lawyer to serve in one of the top three positions at the Department of Justice. A wide range of leaders and organizations have submitted letters in support of Gupta. Those letters are available here
