WASHINGTON — Wade Henderson, interim president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, released the below statement on President Biden’s intent to nominate Robert Santos to serve as director of the U.S. Census Bureau. If confirmed, Santos would be the first person of color to serve as a permanent Census Bureau director:

“The dedicated career Census Bureau employees have worked tirelessly in the face of unprecedented challenges to finish the 2020 Census. This critical work will help guide the nation out of the current public health crisis and toward a full economic recovery that benefits all communities. However, it is important for the bureau to be led by a Senate-confirmed director who can speak with the level of authority needed to build widespread confidence in the results of a controversial and difficult census. Robert Santos’ deep expertise in statistical methodology, his decades of research to inform policies to improve the lives of disadvantaged populations, and his unwavering commitment to a fair and accurate census demonstrate he is that leader. We urge the Senate to confirm Santos promptly.”
