WASHINGTONWade Henderson, interim president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, released the below statement on the Senate’s vote to confirm Judge Gustavo Gelpí to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit:

“Judge Gelpí’s work as a federal public defender, his even-handedness as a district court judge, and his experience with issues directly impacting Puerto Ricans are especially notable and will bring a depth of much-needed perspective to the First Circuit. It is vital that our judiciary reflects the diversity of the nation and the legal profession, and Judge Gelpí will be the only Latino currently serving and the first former public defender ever to serve on the First Circuit. Together, President Biden and the Senate are ensuring our courts look like and understand the people who will come before them.”
