WASHINGTON – Wade Henderson, interim president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement on Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas’s announcement of the designation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Cameroon:

“We applaud Secretary Mayorkas and the Biden administration for designating TPS for Cameroon. This decision has been long-awaited by many in our communities and will protect tens of thousands of people from deportation to a country that is unable to safely receive them. This important victory is the result of the hard work and resilience of Black-led immigration organizations who have led the charge on this issue for years. Our leaders better protect and advance our civil and human rights when they listen to those who are most directly impacted.”

The Leadership Conference and its allies have long advocated for TPS for Cameroon, most recently in February of this year.

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights is a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 230 national organizations to promote and protect the rights of all persons in the United States.
