WASHINGTON Lena Zwarensteyn, senior director, fair courts program, The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, released the following statement after the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on the nomination of Nancy Maldonado to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois:

Ms. Maldonado has dedicated her career to advancing equal justice for all. Her experience in civil rights and employment law is needed on the federal bench, and she would bring new perspectives to this court as the first Latina woman to ever serve as a U.S. Senate-confirmed judge in the state of Illinois. A diverse judiciary that works for all of us and reflects the communities it serves increases public trust in our courts. Ms. Maldonado’s impressive experience protecting the rights of working people will make her an exceptional jurist, and we urge the Senate to swiftly confirm her.”
