WASHINGTON Lena Zwarensteyn, senior director, fair courts program, The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, released the following statement on the Senate’s vote to confirm Nina Morrison to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York:

“Nina Morrison has devoted her entire career to defending the rights of those who have been wrongfully convicted, helping to make real the promise of equal justice for people who have been marginalized by the criminal-legal system. Her experience in civil rights law makes her uniquely qualified to serve as a federal judge and will widen the kinds of perspectives considered on the bench. As the second openly LGBTQ judge ever to serve on this court, Ms. Morrison also brings diverse experiences that make our courts more reflective of the people they serve. We look forward to the Senate continuing to confirm outstanding, qualified, and diverse nominees like Nina Morrison.”
